We can’t do it without you

Dear Scooby Friends,

There is no easy way to tell you this or even to ask, but for the sake of the animals, I must be honest and tell you that Scooby needs monetary donations badly.  Since November, we have been over capacity with dogs in the shelter. This is due in part with the Sevilla rescue of 200 dogs in terrible condition and the hunting season ending in February.  As you read the news pages, you see that we continue to rescue and rehabilitate dogs at high costs.  Like the dog with the broken legs. We could have easily said that maybe this dog was better off put to sleep, but this is not how we operate. We are here for the animals and we give them the best chance at survival and then think about how we are going to pay for it.  Sadly, this all costs money.

We are thankful to our partner groups throughout Europe & the US and those adopters in Spain, but sadly the number of adoptions is down, compared to last year. Our partner groups are smaller in size and they also have their own expenses This means that there are more dogs at the shelter and less money to keep the shelter running.

The truth is, donations have also been less. We are trying to bring more money into the shelter with the recent re-opening of the Scooby shop and also virtual adoption program but this is such a small portion of the funds that help keep the shelter operating.  Although the shelter is not in danger of closing and the animals are still getting the care that they would normally. However, in the future, we are going to have to stop rescuing dogs on a large scale, such as Sevilla.  Sadly these dogs are the ones that need us just as much as those that are brought to our shelter… maybe even more, but the reality is, nothing in life is free and to care for these animals we need your help.

In addition to the animal needs, there are also operational needs such as the transport van that gives our animals a chance for a better life. We need to keep the maintenance on this vehicle perfect, as the safety of the dogs and the Scooby staff is very important when traveling around Europe for transports.  In the shelter, we are looking to repair many of the paddocks as the dogs are absolutely amazing at destroying them.  We are also looking to purchase a commercial washer and dryer that can handle the capacity of all the washing we do with dog coats and blankets. The list is always growing with repairs and needs and once we are able to fix one thing, another is broken or needs to be replaced.
